Planned Branch Programs 2011-2012

General meetings are held on the second Saturday each month September through May. Unless otherwise noted meetings are held at the Community Room on the second floor of the Plaza Building at Glenwood Place, 5326 NE 81st Ave, 98662. (Google Map) Prospective members can attend up to 3 meetings as guests before joining.

Branch members form committees to plan the monthly programs. See a list of this year's committee members.

Welcome Back Brunch
Fort Vancouver Historic Trust

Please join us for a tasty meal and a chance to catch up with friends. This annual brunch is hosted by the executive board. You are encouraged to bring a guest for this informative meeting.

The meeting will be held at the newly refurbished Artillery Barracks Building at the Fort Vancouver Historic Reserve, 600 East Hatheway Road (Map)

Vancouver Branch 80th Birthday Party
   Peculiar Intimacies: Rending Antebellum Atrocities from Behind the Veil.
   Food Drive for North County Community Food Bank
   Collection for Holiday Family in Need

Help celebrate the 80th anniversary of the founding of Vancouver Branch.

Speaker: Lynn Makau, an Assistant Professor of English at Willamette University and a 2010 AAUW Fellow. Lynn Makau teaches courses in African American Literature, postslavery fiction, Toni Morrison, and motherhood in world literature. Dr. Makau is also affiliated with, and teaches courses for, Programs in Women's and Gender Studies, American Ethnic Studies, and Asian Studies at Willamette. The topic of her presentation will be “Peculiar Intimacies: Rending Antebellum Atrocities from Behind the Veil.” It makes reference to the 19th-century sentimental fiction practice of representing the violence and abuses within slavery through a shroud of propriety thought appropriate for female readers.

Please help community members in need have a “Happy Thanksgiving” indeed through the North County Community Food Bank! Please bring to the meeting canned and other non-perishable food items to be used for Thanksgiving meals for individuals and families in need. Items suggested by the food bank are: pasta, dry beans, rice, macaroni & cheese, peanut butter, and cereal.

Vancouver Branch sponsors a family each year through a chosen charity. This year, for the second time, it is the the Stepping Stones program of Hospice Southwest Family Holiday Project. Stepping Stones supplies a suggested shopping list for each family member and AAUW members donate cash or the specific items on the list.

Holiday Brunch and Silent Auction for Ed Foundation

Annual Holiday Brunch with musical entertainment by Starlight Singers (Sweet Adelines)

The Royal Oaks Country Club, is located at 8917 NE Fourth Plain Blvd., 98662.

This entertainment for this year’s holiday brunch will be a performance by the Starlight Singers, a Sweet Adelines group.

Members bring items for the silent auction and raffle such as "regiftable" items, edibles, handmade items, collectibles, or services such as a dinner, use of a cottage, etc. Be creative! Please be prepared to put a minimum bid value on your item. All proceeds benefit the Educational Foundation and our scholarships at Clark College and WSU-Vancouver.

The cost of the brunch is $25 payable in advance to Donna Roberge (695-0004) by December 2. The reservation form can be found on page 2 of the November Voice. Please consider inviting guests to share in this delightful occasion.

Speaker: Arlene Hinckley, ACSW, a former hospice social worker, on death with dignity. Light refreshments will be served.

At this annual event members bring up to 10 books to exchanges and each donate $10 for scholarships.

Annual Meeting
Collect Underwear for Women in Jail
Securing our Financial Future: Wills and Trusts

March 10 is our Annual Meeting where we elect officers and vote on any bylaw and guideline changes.

Underwear will be collected to be distributed through YWCA's WORTH Program (Women Offenders' Rehabilitation through Training and Help)

Speaker: Elizabeth Perry, a Vancouver lawyer who emphasizes probate, guardianships, revocable living trusts, wills, Medicaid, elder law and estate planning issues in her law practice. She will be speaking on wills and trusts. Check her website: www.revocablelivingtrustslawyer.com

International Domestic Violence

Speaker: Paula Lucas, Founder and Executive Director of the Americans Overseas Domestic Violence Crisis Center. Paula fled back to the USA, after living in Europe and the Middle East for 14 years, with her three sons to escape domestic violence and child abuse in April 1999. She founded the organization in September 1999 as an on-line resource while she and her children were still living in a domestic violence shelter.
